If you live in Northern California, three circuits show up on the calendar again and again: Thunderhill Raceway Park, Sonoma Raceway, and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. They are all world-class, but they are not equally kind to a first-timer. Here is how they compare when you are choosing where to spend day one.
Thunderhill: the best place to learn
Thunderhill near Willows is where most NorCal drivers and riders cut their teeth, and for good reason. The main circuit is long and flowing with generous runoff, so an early mistake usually means a harmless trip across some pavement or grass rather than a wall. It also gets the most novice-friendly organizers and the cheapest seat time in the region. Sonoma: technical, hilly, and less forgiving
Sonoma Raceway is a driver favorite for the same reason it humbles beginners: elevation. Blind crests, off-camber corners, and the plunging Carousel demand that you commit before you can see the exit, and there is less runoff than at Thunderhill to bail you out. It is a fantastic place to get better once you have a couple of days under your belt, but it is a lot to take in cold. Check the Sonoma schedule when you are ready to step up.
Laguna Seca: iconic, demanding, and premium
Laguna Seca is the bucket-list one, home to the famous Corkscrew, and it drives like it looks — fast, committed, and unforgiving of laziness. It is also the most expensive seat time of the three and sits under a strict sound limit that keeps some bikes and cars out, so it takes a little planning to attend.
